The SRA’s warning notice on the misuse of AI makes clear that solicitors remain fully accountable for all AI-assisted work, including material prepared for clients, courts and third parties.
It highlights two principal risks: fabricated authorities and other ‘hallucinations’ entering legal work, and breaches of confidentiality or privilege when sensitive information is uploaded to unsuitable tools.
Drawing on recent cases, the notice urges firms to verify every AI-generated output, establish robust governance and supervision, and understand how AI systems store, access and use data before incorporating them into legal practice.
