Roddy Cairns
Roddy is a legal academic and non-practising solicitor, qualified in Scotland, Ireland and England & Wales. His main areas of teaching and research expertise are Contract law, Sports law, Roman law and legal ethics. He is the founding Clinical Director of the University of Strathclyde’s Business Law Clinic, which allows him to combine his experience in practice with his current academic role.
Roddy obtained an LL.B. with Distinction from the University of Glasgow, followed by a Diploma with Distinction from the same institution. He then trained and qualified at one of Scotland’s foremost commercial law firms, working for several years in the Dispute Resolution team with a focus on international and cross border disputes. Roddy also had a practice as a sports lawyer, and acted for some of Scotland’s best known sports clubs and governing bodies in disciplinary and regulatory matters.
Prior to studying law, Roddy trained as an actor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and went on to perform in venues such as the Barbican, Edinburgh Festival Theatre and Glasgow King’s Theatre.
Roddy’s biggest passion outside of work is playing shinty, a stick sport native to the Highlands which gives him a connection to home (and an excuse to spend his summer weekends gallivanting around the beautiful west coast of Scotland). He also loves football (the ever-underwhelming Stranraer FC), folk music and spending time with his partner and their little sausage dog. If he had time, he would like to brush up on his Scots Gaelic and learn to play the accordion.
