The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is planning to introduce a change to the way people qualify to become a solicitor. The new route to qualification will involve passing the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) which will be introduced no sooner than September 2021.

It is intended that the exams will be split into two stages, namely SQE1 and SQE2. For further details on the two-part exams, please see our What is the Solicitors' Qualifying Exam guide.

To date, the SRA have not specified how candidates should prepare and train to take the SQE. Instead they have stated in their most recent SQE Consultation Summary that they wish to support law students in making informed choices, allowing candidates to choose the solicitors qualifying exam training which best suits their circumstances.

As the SRA is no longer prescribing any particular training route to become qualified as a solicitor, such as a LLB, Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), Legal Practice Course (LPC) or Professional Skills Course‎ (PSC), you are able to choose the qualification path that best suits your training requirements and career goals.
